Venezuela’s opposition leader Juan Guaidó returned home on Tuesday to chaotic scenes at Caracas airport as his supporters and opponents fought with each other, following a three-week North American and European tour when he met Donald Trump and Boris Johnson.
Mr Guaidó arrived on a flight from Lisbon after openly defying a travel ban imposed by the government of Nicolás Maduro. Hundreds of his supporters, including members of congress, flocked to the airport to greet him despite efforts by the security forces to bar their way.
Mr Maduro’s supporters also turned up, some holding banners denouncing Mr Guaidó as a traitor. There were fistfights outside the airport, and pushing and jostling inside.
