When Lenín Moreno won April’s presidential election in Ecuador, international investors, bondholders and local business leaders let out a collective groan of disappointment.

Their fear was that, not for the first time, Ecuadoreans had rejected a market-friendly candidate and opted for a socialist who would push the country towards protectionism, fiscal mismanagement and economic underachievement.
